In partnership with the Peterborough County Stewardship Council, Cathy established a Tall Grass Prairie meadow as a way of educating and raising public awareness about this rapidly disappearing species.
Cathy established a tree nursery for growing native species. She spends time each fall collecting local seeds to add to a growing seed collection. This serves as a local seed bank for indigenous species that are genetically suited to growing in this area. As well, she established the Kawartha Environmental Educators Network, an association of educators interested in sharing environmental education resources and programming ideas. The network also has an active website (www.keenet.org) with many resource ideas and environmental references.
She taught residents of the Kawartha Lakes Region to use alternative lawn maintenance practices. She worked to restore many shorelines and lakes, improving water quality and increasing public awareness about the importance of riparian ecosystems. Lastly, she educated thousands about the importance of preserving local wildlife. Through Cathy’s efforts, literally hundreds of small-naturalized areas now serve as habitat for local wildlife.
Despite confronting some formidable challenges, Cathy has remained steadfast and full of energy. Cathy is driven by a strong belief in the importance of protecting and enhancing local habitats. Her work will have an enduring legacy.
