Lyle Benko, Faculty Advisor at the University of Regina, has committed himself to environmental education through his leadership, mentoring, advising and countless volunteer hours. Mr. Benko has a long history of extensive experience in education. His bright vision for a ‘greener’ future coupled with his education background, has allowed him to make an impact on environmental education in Saskatchewan. His inspiration comes from his students. One student states, “As a university student, I found it particularly inspiring to see a semi-retired professor invest much time and energy outside the classroom in pursuit of a more sustainable campus, community and Earth.”
This past year Lyle was an instrumental member of the advisory team for Regina’s first Youth Forum on Sustainability. In 2003, he was an integral force in initiating the development of a nature interpretation centre for Regina’s Wascana Marsh through the Friends of Wascana Marsh project, a group that he co-chairs. He also facilitated climate change workshops at teacher conferences, and contributed to the Harmony Foundation’s document Environmental Education Needs in Saskatchewan.
Mr. Benko was a key contributor to Environment Canada’s Framework for Environmental Learning and Sustainability in Canada and the City of Regina’s Green Ribbon Advisory Committee’s Climate Change’s Community Greenhouse Gas Reduction Action Plan.
