Tom Gossett is a combination of visionary and realist - able to use his patience and dedication and to turn ideas into reality. Nearly 25 years ago he founded The Salt Spring Island Water Preservation Society, the island's first environmental group. He has left a legacy of protected forested watersheds and drinking water sources, lakes free of water-ski boats, and restrained residential development on watershed lands. Tom has been the Society's foremost volunteer - building a track record of commitment to protecting environmental values.
When local governments declined to regulate gas-powered motors on drinking-water
lakes, Tom spearheaded campaigns leading all the way to the Supreme Court
of Canada, where the federal Electric Motors Only (EMO) law was upheld - to
the benefit of over 400 “drinking-water lakes” across Canada.
When illegal logging threatened lands pledged to the Society, Tom and the Water Preservation Society acted and obtained a court injunction to stop the logging.
In 2003, when a land “development” corporation agreed to transfer some
300 acres of watershed lands to the Society for perpetual protection, Tom was
present for the signing. This kind of dedication has placed Tom in the forefront
of many worthy community projects and we thank him for a quarter century of
devotion to Salt Spring Island's watershed lands.
