Finalist Benoit Lefebvre
It's a Fact

Benoit has dedicated a lifetime of work toward the environmental protection of Cold Lake and the Beaver River Basin. Thanks largely to Mr. Lefebvre, locals are able to enjoy the continued health and vitality of this water system.

Benoit Lefebvre is an 88-year-old former businessman and active environmentalist - born and raised in Cold Lake, Alberta. He has dedicated a lifetime of work toward the protection of Cold Lake and the Beaver River Basin, which straddles the Alberta and Saskatchewan border.

His achievement in this endeavour cannot be overstated. Beginning with questions raised at the Chamber of Commerce, and the founding of a Community Advisory Committee, Ben brought important issues forward to the Alberta Government about the use of the water source by public and private industry. The resulting task force - Beaver River Basin Water Management Task Force - managed to influence the oil and gas industry and the Provincial Government toward the conservation and safe use of water in the area.

Ben has lobbied the Provincial Government vigorously in order to decrease pollution and over-fishing of the lake, with considerable success. Thanks to Mr. Lefebvre, locals are able to enjoy the continued health of the fishery, although the battle is ongoing. Ben also managed to get Provincial Park status for a special area of the basin. The park is a sanctuary for over 200 species of birds, and is destination for many locals and visitors to the area.

In the words of one colleague he has impressed along the way: "Ben’s greatest accomplishment has been bringing the community and industry together in an environmentally friendly way. Industry listens to the concerns of the citizens, and solutions are arrived at that fit the uniqueness of the area. It is a partnership - all thanks, in large part, to the efforts of one man, who never knew when to quit working on behalf of a thriving community."
