Finalist Ingmar Lee
It's a Fact

Ingmar has planted over 1 million trees in BC and Alberta. His burgeoning environmental activism was strengthened in the Canadian wilderness, living and working in these valuable forests.

Ingmar Lee credits his early environmental passions to an eye-opening trek through the Himalayas, on hiatus from his high school life. He was greatly impressed by the symbiotic relationship that the inhabitants had with their beautiful but unforgiving natural surroundings.

After returning to Canada, Ingmar became intimately acquainted with the country’s most diverse ecosystems. He has planted over 1 million trees in BC and Alberta, over his 21 years as a silviculture worker. His burgeoning environmental activism was strengthened in the Canadian wilderness, living and working in these valuable forests, and witnessing first-hand the many destructive logging practices that have threatened them. He has campaigned against the destructive practice of clearcutting, which has resulted in watershed pollution, and loss of habitat, among other issues. One specific example is the threatened status of the Vancouver Island Marmot, an endemic species that has been decimated by logging on the island.

Ingmar traveled to Europe - Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Holland - lecturing on BC’s suspect logging practices, and has subsequently assembled a 200-member listserve called 'enviroXchange' during the 20-lecture university speaking tour. Presently, Mr. Lee is using his training as an arborist to orchestrate and direct the Cathedral Grove tree-sit/blockade, which involves the raising of 8 platforms, 120 feet into the canopy, to stop the destruction of these ancient trees.

Mr. Lee is an outspoken environmental activist, with seemingly endless energy. Aside from his ongoing relations with the BC media, Ingmar is also continuously furthering his knowledge of the ecosystems he strives to protect. He has undertaken many research projects in the region, working closely with First Nations and University partners. His passion for the health of his community environment is truly inspiring.
