Judy Winter believes in truly working together with all parties involved in keeping our environment healthy and vibrant. As part of an Alberta group called the Butte Action Committee, Judy has worked closely with oil and gas companies in order to reduce their fresh water use during operations, and she has also been at the forefront of discussions regarding Coal Bed Methane and the non-conventional extraction of natural gas, striving to ensure that minimal to no environmental impacts result.
Judy's approach has been instrumental in guaranteeing participation from major oil and gas companies, and she has urged and influenced the industry into consulting closely with affected communities. She helped organize the provincial Synergy group, which was created to provide resources and support to Alberta communities working closely with the petroleum industry. The main organizing theme is that by ensuring community involvement and close participation with industry practices, Albertans will be empowered to make sure that sustainable industry practices are maintained.
While working tirelessly over concerns about the quality and quantity of Alberta's water, Judy is involved in an otherwise busy life running a large farm, teaching at a school, and occasionally taking care of her Grandchildren. Her intimate knowledge of natural processes and industry's impact on them, as well as her penchant for constructive criticism, has resulted in a truly positive impact on her community.
