Finalist Wayne Scott
It's a Fact

Wayne has been involved in Toronto’s active transportation industry for the past 24 years, racking up well over two hundred thousand pollution-free, delivery kilometres using only his feet, a variety of bicycles and hand carts, and public transit.

Although it is well-used cliché, it is no doubt appropriate to say that Wayne Scott does indeed ‘walk the talk.’ Wayne has been involved in Toronto’s active transportation industry for the past 24 years, racking up well over two hundred thousand pollution-free, delivery kilometres using only his feet, a variety of bicycles and hand carts, and public transit.

Mr. Scott helped to found the HOOF&CYCLE - Active Transport Workers Guild (previously known as the Courier Coalition), which has gradually become a globally recognized, sustainable transportation think tank. Working under the title ‘Automobile Dependence Reduction Officer,’ Wayne has helped to achieve many victories, including acknowledgement from the Canada Revenue Agency, that food and drink may now be used as a tax-deductible alternative fuel source for human-powered delivery vehicles. Wayne had fought and debated for this for 18 years.

Additionally, Wayne has worked with Provincial and Municipal governments to alter unsafe working conditions, environmental policy, and infrastructure. He was a founding member of the Toronto Pedestrian Committee, and a former co-chair of that body, attempting to promote the ecological benefits of a ‘walkable’ city. Wayne is a member of Toronto’s most venerable pedestrian activist group - ‘Feet on the Street’ - and was a member of the CarFree Day Working Group.

Through all these initiatives, Wayne is most comfortable simply practicing what he preaches, and enjoying the active life that an alternative form of transportation can deliver. His boundless energy and dedication to the cause is an inspiration to everyone who yearns for effective and sustainable urban transportation.
