Peter Jansen lives by the philosophy that one person can make a difference. Most certainly, Peter has had an enormous impact on the way in which fellow residents of St. Albert, Alberta think about the earth and the footprint they indelibly leave behind. Between organizing Edmonton's Earth Day Events for nearly 15 years, working with the Canadian Hunger Foundation, developing educational resource materials and performing at fundraising concerts in Nairobi and throughout North America, it is clear that Jansen leads by example.
Peter has been an organizing member of Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival since the founding of Earth Day International in 1990. In 1993, Peter took over the leadership of the entire festival and has since transformed it into the single largest Earth Day event in the country – bringing together representatives from over 60 environmental organizations and gathering a crowd of nearly 32,000 people.
Peter is the Alberta representative for the Canadian Hunger Foundation, which promotes environmental responsibility and self-sustenance in the developing countries of the world. In this role, Peter has spearheaded the organization of two concerts which raised money for a self-help project in Senegal to stop the encroachment of the Sahara Desert and a project in Kenya to improve water supply and enhance shade tree growth. Annually, Peter produces an updated version of a “What You Can Do” brochure, which is distributed to over 520 schools. For this outstanding effort, Peter was awarded the prestigious Alberta Emerald Award in 2005 for “individual commitment to environmental excellence”.
In 2005, Peter stepped down from his role as Earth Day coordinator so that he and his wife, Mary, could focus their efforts on composing, performing and recording fun and musical environmental education programs for elementary schools and children’s eco-festivals. Peter and Mary have already performed over 50 times in locations across western Canada, California and Arizona. Globally, Peter has also used his musical talents to raise funds and awareness of pressing issues facing Africa during a recent visit to the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Funds generated from this performance were used to help a local school install a well and for the children to learn environmentally-responsible agriculture.
The impact of Peter’s vision and commitment has been profound, not only within his own community, but extending throughout the entire province of Alberta and reaching as far as the south-western United States and across the ocean to Africa. He is committed, passionate and dedicated to helping people tread more lightly on the earth and has changed the perceptions of many, about the importance of “Earth Day” being celebrated everyday.
