It's a Fact

The Western Environment Centre is a non-profit NGO dedicated to providing environmental education to the citizens of Corner Brook, Newfoundland since 2001.

The Western Environment Centre (WEC) is a non-profit NGO dedicated to providing environmental education to the citizens of Corner Brook, Newfoundland since 2001. Since its creation, it has been managed by a small group of dedicated volunteers from the community.

The Western Environment Centre has a history of partnering with other local environmental organizations, assisting with a variety of environmental initiatives and providing the neccessary work space for community projects. In the past year, the WEC has established a partnership with the city of Corner Brook to develop watershed related initiatives.

The WEC has also been an Earth Day Canada accredited Earth Day Coordinator since 2003. On Earth Day in 2004, the WEC held the first of their GreenSpeak Environmental Lectures which addresses topics such as pesticide use, watershed management, organic gardening and the negative impacts of environmental contaminants on human health.

In 2004, the Western Environmental Centre was awarded a $10,000 grant that was used to develop and host a large-scale watershed management workshop in May of 2005. The two-day conference included speakers from across the country and raised public involvement in the protection of municipal drinking water supplies. Shortly after the conference, the municipal government of Corner Brook announced that it would develop a watershed management plan.

As part of their strategy to keep its community informed of environmental issues, the WEC wrote to candidates during the last Federal, Provincial and municipal elections, asking them to respond to a variety of environmental issues. The responses were published in local newspapers, helping people make better informed choices.
