Finalist David Tomlinson
It's a Fact

David’s most outstanding accomplishment is the creation of a protected site within the Aurora community wildlife park known as the East Aurora Provincially Significant Wetland.

Arriving in 1975 from Manchester, England, David Tomlinson has truly made his mark on his local community.

In 1983, David began to personally monitor the Aurora community wildlife park. His commitment to ecological preservation became obvious when development pressures threatened the park area. He used his expertise to formulate a detailed report addressing the park’s rare plants, flyway migration routes, and habitat for sensitive species - always envisioning it as an interconnected habitat.

David has voiced his concerns at every public meeting regarding development of the area. His dedication helped to create a protected site within the park known as the East Aurora Provincially Significant Wetland. Realizing the buffers to the wetland were unsuitable, David filed an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board resulting in a 35 m buffer area.

In addition, David heads up the Wildlife and Naturalization sub-committee where he plans an annual tree planting weekend and the Earth Day Bird Nest campaign. Today, he is working on plans to increase woodland and wetland habitats, as well as a proposal to reforest segments of the town flood plane. He also monitors the storm water ponds and works with his colleague Harry Lumsden, tending to Trumpeter swans.

David has a passion for ornithology, horticulture, and landscape architecture. He's won many awards, received Emeritus status, and has been invited to speak to gardening enthusiasts throughout his community.

At home, David and his wife Dierdre established Merlin's Hollow - an acre of garden with over 15,000 plants! In June of each year, the community visits the grounds to learn gardening tips, with all proceeds going to Aurora's Historical Society.

Overall, David's actions have helped to make Aurora a healthy community for generations to come.
