Brenda Melnychuk is a dedicated teacher at Haldane Elementary school in Chase, B.C. Over the past 17 years, she has introduced several environmental and social justice projects to her school, fostering a generation of informed and considerate eco-citizens of the globe!
Brenda really goes above and beyond the requirements of her job to provide a multitude of extracurricular activities that engage children in environmental issues and global awareness. Much of her work has been focused on the Haldane Elementary Green Kids Club and their activities: keeping the kids interested and having fun, while encouraging stewardship and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
These initiatives not only serve educational or academic purposes, but also contribute to positive change in a very tangible way. Under Brenda's guidance the students have been involved in tree planting in the Middle Chase Creek area, building bat and bird houses, community clean ups, gardening, involvement with local wildlife sanctuaries, and the adoption of endangered species. The group also fundraised over $2000 for the Gardens of Hope Project, which addresses starvation in Madagascar. More recently they have been fundraising for HAVE (Help a Village Effort) which helps communities in India to access clean water.
Brenda has a real talent for creating partnerships. Her endless dedication builds bridges between her students, the wider community and the environment. For example, at this year's Earth Day Celebration, the Mayor, school board representatives, an environment expert guest speaker, and members of the local community all joined staff and students for a day of learning and action.
The work of this inspirational educator has not gone unnoticed, with the school being recognized as the first in Canada to achieve Earth Status III in the SEEDS Foundation's Green School Program. This is no small achievement, rewarding the completion of 3000 environmentally friendly activities. Brenda's enthusiasm for her local environment has helped her school community make better informed choices. |
