Finalist Karen Campbell
It's a Fact

Karen’s passion for food and farming lead her to develop and implement a series of experiential farm-based field trips and in-class programs.

Karen is the perfect example of an environmental activist making a difference on the ground. For 8 years, she has taught students about food and farming.

When government cuts in Ontario became a reality, she rose to the challenge by offering a series of experiential farm-based field trips and in-class programs that she developed herself!

Curriculum Alive, Farmers in the Schools, and Farmer for a Day are far from conventional food and farming programs. Instead, they introduce students to the bigger questions about what makes for healthy societies and healthy environments. Her programs have been exactly what teachers are looking for - linked to the provincial curriculum and interactive. As a result, the demand for her expertise is extraordinary.

Karen is now working towards implementing the Farmer for a Day program on a provincial and quite possibly federal level. She's committed to engaging and inspiring youth so that they understand and appreciate their natural surroundings, as well as where their food comes from.

Karen is a founding member of Everdale Environmental Learning Centre where she works as an organic farmer and educator. She has successfully developed partnerships with FoodShare, other non-profit foundations, school boards and farmers and coordinated public tours, community events, and workshops for more than 15,000 people! Karen's passion for her local environment is unmistakable.
