It's a Fact

Mary made it her mission to develop and implement a successful recycling program that has reduced the amount of garbage produced by her school by 50 percent!

What do you do when your school of 450 students and 50 staff doesn’t have a recycling program? You start one!

That’s what Mary did three years ago at New Prospect Public School in Dryden. After seeing the amount of recycled materials her school produced daily, she made it her mission to develop and implement a successful recycling program.

Mary started the Green Team with just 6 volunteers and together they visited each classroom answering questions about recycling. She was originally met with resistance but this did not deter her passion for positive change. She continued on, encouraging teachers to start just with paper, while using her talent and zeal to create the Green Team Star Award Program, where the best weekly recyclers were awarded with a gold, silver or bronze star to be displayed on their classrooms doors.

Teachers and students finally got involved. Now Mary has 40 volunteers and together they have reduced the amount of garbage produced by her school by 50 percent! Maintaining a recycling program for three years is indicative of her care and commitment to the future of Dryden.

Mary’s dedication to Dryden doesn’t stop there, however. She also sits on both the School Closure Committee and the Computer Curriculum Committee where she makes invaluable decisions that affect the local school community. Mary’s drive continues to bring about needed environmental change in her local community
