Aliette Lajoie—2010 Hometown Hero Finalist
Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, Québec
Aliette Lajoie
It’s a Fact

Aliette has dedicated her life as an educator to promote environmental action, inspiring change in her students and throughout her community.

Aliette, an advocate for environmental education, is a retired school teacher who can proudly reflect back on her efforts to promote environmental awareness and action to her students and community. As the administrative representative for her school on the Marguerite Bourgeois School Board Environment Committee for over ten years, Aliette created drama classes to raise awareness about the protection of local environments and helped her school achieve Green Status.

Since entering into retirement, Aliette has been active with a citizen-based committee working with the local municipality to increase community involvement in environmental activities and issues. As Committee Chair, Aliette has promoted the importance of a healthy environment, meeting on a monthly basis to ensure important issues are brought to the attention of municipal officials.

Aliette is also involved with countless environmental education and action initiatives, involving youth and adults in Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, which include

  • Leading a youth led Climate Change campaign, Cyclo Nord-Sud and the Green Patrol
  • Lending writing skills to the French Canadian Association for Environmental Studies and an environmental column in the local newspaper
  • Organizing Earth Day events, educational workshops and conferences
  • Incorporating recycling bins and benches made from recycled materials in several community parks.
