Andrew McAllister—2010 Hometown Hero Finalist
Toronto, Ontario
![]() It’s a Fact
Andrew has become the voice of sustainability throughout Ryerson University, successfully gaining administration support to ban the use of single-use bottled water by 2013. After starting his schooling at Ryerson University, Andrew became involved with campus life and founded the Green Action Group to address environmental issues on campus. As chair, he quickly secured the support of 60 members to help address issues like reforming waste management and diversion practices on campus. Andrew ran a very successful campaign to reduce, and ultimately eliminate the sale and use of single-use water bottles on campus. By gaining support from student pledges and raising awareness through creative activism, the campaign received significant attention from local media and university administration. Due to Andrew’s leadership and dedication, Ryerson has successfully pledged to transition to become a single-use water bottle free campus by 2013—making Ryerson the first university in Ontario to accomplish this goal. To his credit, Andrew was recently appointed as a board member of Ryerson’s Student Union and is campaigning to become the university’s next Sustainability Commissioner. |
