It’s a Fact

NHM is on a mission to educate local and regional communities on the importance of naturalizing gardens and home landscapes.

The Naturalized Habitat Network (NHN) focuses on educating community members about native plants, naturalized landscaping and natural heritage. Since 2002, the organization has taught over 650 people locally and more than 400 people on a regional level.

NHN recently took on its most ambitious program to date, Seeds of Hope. The program is devoted to developing training resources and activities to assist in the cultivation of native plants within local communities. By adopting the principles of biodiversity, education, community and sustainability, the program teaches communities members how to grow native plants through a series of formal and practical training sessions. The program also created a Native Seeds Identification and Cultivation Guide for Southern Ontario.

NHN also developed the Oasis Outreach Program, promoting the use high volume rain water containers. The Oasis containers can collect up to 1 000 litres of rain water for irrigation use, and can reduce the consumption of local municipal water sources. NHN also launched the Invasive Exotic Community Education Program, delivering public presentations, media interviews and articles to raise awareness about the issue of invasive exotic species throughout Ontario.
