Hometown Heroes: Recognizing Environmental Achievement

About Hometown Heroes

The Hometown Heroes Award Program was established in 2004 by Earth Day Canada to recognize and celebrate environmental leaders, groups and organizations who foster meaningful, long–term community awareness and action. The Hometown Heroes Award Program is made possible through a committed partnership with Cascades and the RBC Foundation.

About Earth Day Canada

Earth Day Canada (EDC), a national environmental charity founded in 1990, provides Canadians with the practical knowledge and tools they need to lessen their impact on the environment. EDC educates, empowers and inspires Canadians to achieve local solutions to improve the state of the environment. EDC educational and recognition programs engage children, students, teachers, families and everyday Canadians.

The success of EDC programs lies in the fact that they teach Canadians about simple, easy to accomplish, age-appropriate actions that any person can do.

In recognition of Earth Day Canada’s six year round programs and its success as the driving force behind annual Earth Day events—engaging over 6 000 000 Canadians and virtually every school aged child in Canada each year—EDC was chosen as Canada’s “Outstanding Non-profit Organization” for 2008 by the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication.
