Earth Day Canada gets a makeover
Earth Day Canada Logo

Earth Day Canada (EDC) has empowered Canadians to achieve local environmental solutions since 1991. Recently, we went through a re-branding and positioning exercise to ensure Earth Day Canada and its programs continue to meet the needs of the teachers, students, homeowners, individuals and municipalities who rely on us to provide the latest in environmental education and solutions.

Thanks to some great feedback from Earth Day Canada supporters, we’re positive our new look and positioning will continue to encourage and inspire environmental achievement across Canada. Let us know what you think of our new look by dropping us a line at keith@earthday.ca.

Earth Day Canada Gala to take over the Drake Hotel

The green highlight of the 2008 calendar year will be the 5th Annual Earth Day Canada Gala. Taking over the über-hip Drake Hotel on June 18, this will not be your typical Gala — no tasteless food, no boring speeches, no scrambling for the exits.

Enjoy the culinary delights of world renowned chef Michael Stadtländer as you casually stroll all three levels of the Drake Hotel, including rooftop and side-street patios. Feed off the exuberant energy of Gala Emcee, Mark McKinney, veteran of Kids in the Hall and SNL. Celebrate the environmental triumphs and achievements of Clayton Ruby and Earth Day Canada’s 2008 Hometown Heroes Award winner. Be dazzled by performance artists and impromptu displays of individual talent over the course of an unforgettable night.

Of course there is much more to the Gala than we can detail here, so add June 18th, 2008 to your social calendar. It will be an event you don’t want to miss.

Under Review — 2008 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program

The judging process is underway for the 2008 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program! After receiving hundreds of remarkable applications from high school students across the country, our judges are now left with the difficult task of selecting a national winner from 15 regional winners.

One outstanding project, initiated by tomorrow’s environmental leaders, included the founding and operation of Lights Out Canada and Lights Out World. Annual events, held by Lights Out Canada see schools turn off their lights and spend the day learning about global warming. Offering immediate benefits to the environment while building long term environmental awareness, we wish this ‘environmental leader of tomorrow’ the best of luck!

Powering down to ‘power’ profits

Has your business calculated the costs of leaving office PCs on all night? Weighed the pros and cons of over night updates and backups? According to Jim Harris of Backbone Magazine, March/April 2008, businesses around the world are wasting millions in profit.

“A 2007 report estimates that 31.2 million office PCs are left on overnight in U.S. businesses, wasting some US$1.72 billion of electricity and pumping 14.4 million tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere every year”.

Whether your business is a multi-national or based in a home office, power savings mean power profits!

Before you buy that TV...
Energy Star TV

Current trends show, LCD and plasma televisions are superior products compared to tube televisions. The only problem is, the one you own is in perfect working condition and it feels a little wrong to get rid of.

The good news: virtually all new flat screen televisions are more energy-efficient than their predecessors. Energy Star TVs can reduce your set’s energy consumption by 30% in standby mode and is 30% more efficient when turned on.

The bad news: the bigger the screen, the more energy it requires. Canada dumps more than 140,000 tonnes of e-waste into landfills every year. This includes computer equipment, phones, televisions, stereos and small home appliances.

It’s important to be mindful of environmental costs when purchasing new products and disposing of potentially hazardous appliances. By recycling your outdated electronics with care, we can ensure the recovery and reuse of materials, and help reduce the pollution and energy that goes into producing new ones.
