1. General

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is April 22 every year, all around the world. Earth Day has grown so much that celebrations take place throughout the whole month of April, also known as Earth Month.

How many people celebrate Earth Day?

More than 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity.

What is the history of Earth Day?

Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Dennis Hayes celebrated the first Earth Day in 1970. For more details, see Our History.

How many programs does Earth Day Canada have?

Earth Day Canada offers several free, year-round programs focused on education, action, recognition and financial support for Canadians of all ages. We also conduct research and offer two fee for services: Employee Engagement and Communications Consulting.

How are Earth Day Canada’s programs funded?

As a national environmental charity, we rely on funding from our partners, sponsors and individual donors. We have a charity auction on eBay and host the annual Earth Day Canada Gala to raise funds to deliver our year-round programs.

How can I support Earth Day Canada’s programs?

Show your support by making a secure financial donation online, or by mailing a cheque or by donating your Aeroplan Miles. Tax receipts will be provided for financial donations.

How can I be less harmful to the health of the environment in my home?

There are a number of easy simple actions you can do right now. We have Guides and Tips, fun EcoTrivia (PDF) to test your knowledge and a number of articles to read. You can sign up for our newsletter, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and find us on LinkedIn to keep up to date with Earth Day Canada’s activities.

3. Kids and Schools

What Earth Day resources are available for kids?

Earth Day Canada’s EcoKids program offers free games, activities and more for kids aged 7-12. Our EcoMentors and the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship programs are great for high school students to get involved and recognized for their leadership.

Where can I find Earth Day activity ideas for schools?

A free membership to EcoKids provides numerous printable resources for parents and teachers.

How can I find an environmental speaker to come into my classroom?

An extensive list of school speakers can be found on the EcoKids web site.

How do I register my school for Earth Day?

Events can be registered using this online form.

How can I get a copy of the Courting Reuse video?

Courting Reuse is a humorous look at why we should reuse items instead of buying brand new and is suitable for Grades 1 to 5. We no longer distribute hard copies of the video. Instead, we have placed it on our YouTube Channel.

4. Volunteering and Internships

Does Earth Day Canada offer internships?

Internships are offered throughout the year. Contact us with your resume and area of interest.

How do I volunteer for Earth Day?

Volunteer positions are available throughout the year in our Toronto office. Contact us and let us know your skills and interests. You can also check event listings in your area and contact the local organizer to find a volunteer opportunity.

How do I recruit volunteers for my event?

You can post your event here and in the description, state that you are looking for volunteers.

5. French Resources

Is any of the information on your web site available in French?

Our Scholarship program and Hometown Heroes program are offered in both official languages. We offer French resources in our EcoKids program and we run contests and campaigns in both languages. Organizations can apply to our Community Environment Fund in French, although at this time, we don’t have forms available in French. Our newsletters are all offered in both languages.

We plan to continue to build our French language resources.

How can I find out about Earth Day events in my community?

How do I register an event?

Events can be registered using our online event registration form.

What resources are available to distribute at my event?

Each year we create posters for Earth Day and in addition to that, our brochure, our EcoKids Calendar and more can be downloaded and printed for free. As an EcoKids member (it’s free), you can also order EcoKids supplies while they last but make sure you plan in advance to your event, as we have a limited supply every year.

I would like to distribute seedlings at my event, where can I find a supplier in my area?

Earth Day Canada recommends distributing packs of native wildflower seeds at your events, rather than seedlings. Contact your local nursery or garden centre to see if they are willing to donate the seeds.

Where can I find a list of events where high school students can volunteer?

You can check the list of registered events in your community and contact the event organizer to see if they need volunteer help.
